Be A Lifesaver

[Today's post was tough to write and may be upsetting to read. Please try anyway.]

Over the past few months I've mentioned a family member who's been in and out of the hospital.  My roommate (I call him Zeus, but his name is Sam [it's also Amanda, but more on that in a bit]) has gone from not wanting anyone to even know it was him to wanting me to share a bit of his story and what our family has been going through over the past few months.

First though, there's a reason I'm posting today specifically.  He'll be walking in the Philadelphia Out Of The Darkness Walk (to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) on October 6th and is seeking donations.  On our way home from his last hospitalization, I saw a bus shelter ad for the walk.  I pointed it out to him and he decided right away that this is something he needs to do.  I'm really proud of him, for this and so many other reasons.  He is also seeking donations to fund a service dog to help him continue his recovery.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention uses a ship's lifesaver as its logo.  This is perfect on so many levels that it's almost poetic.  I knew exactly what I'd do as nail art for this post.

Suicidal depression is a lot like drowning.  You feel adrift, pulled down, sinking.  Like drowning, the people around you may not even realize you're struggling until you go under.  If you're lucky, someone is there to throw you a rope and help you come back to life.  For me, years ago, it was my best friend who brought me back to life and I'll always be grateful to him.  Zeus started to capsize in May, but it had been on its way since long before we met.

When Zeus and I first met, he was painfully timid.  My partner, Stewart, and I had been dating for a few months and he decided it was time that I met his roommate.  He'd explained the situation a bit, but it took some getting used to.  He'd met Zeus while going to college in Florida.  Zeus had run away from an abusive home and was homeless.  They bonded over video games and Stewart took Zeus in.  Not much more was explained to me at first.  It's not an easy story to tell, but I'm going to try.

Zeus was born female, but is transgender and lives as male now.  It's something he's always felt, but we've worked over the past year to help him start to transition.  When I first met him, he was still "she".  He was the result of an unplanned, and unwanted, pregnancy.  He doesn't talk much about his mother, his grandmother, or his childhood.  It's still very painful for him and he's only just starting to confront his past in therapy.  He was abused, physically and verbally.  He has scars and severe emotional damage.  He was also neglected, which worsened some inherited health problems.  He was sexually abused too.  It's a testament to his strength that he managed to survive and escape that life.

His life started to improve when Stewart took him in.  He treated Zeus like a person, something few others had ever done.  Stewart describes Zeus as being like a "feral child" back then.  He became a sort of surrogate father to Zeus, doing his best to socialize him and mend some of the damage.  This overwhelming kindness for someone so downtrodden is part of what "sold me" on Stewart, so in a way we're together because of Zeus.  I became part of their family and I started doing my best to try to help Zeus too.

There's only so much that love and kindness can do though.  Zeus needed more help than we could give.  One Sunday in May, he told me he needed to go somewhere safe.  He couldn't handle it all anymore and was scared of himself and the things in his own head.  I brought him to a hospital to be committed.  This wasn't weakness.  It's one of the bravest things I've ever seen someone do.

He's gone back twice since and is now in therapy and on medications.  The diagnosis is mostly Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Memories of his abuse are very real for him, to the point of hallucination.  He literally can't escape his fearful past.

Still, the change in him since starting to get help has been unbelievable.  It's like the color's coming back to his personality.  When we met, everything scared him and he was just moving through life.  He barely even spoke some days.  Now, he's becoming such a character.  There's warmth, humor, interest....and hope.  He talks about the future he wants.

Zeus has come so far in the past few months, but he needs help to go further.  He's stuck at a half-way point.  He's come back to reality enough to want to stay here for good, but he's still very limited by his PTSD and social anxiety.  He did a lot of research and found that while medication can't do much to treat his flashbacks, a service dog could make all of the difference.  As he is now, he can't risk leaving the house alone.  A flashback could happen at any time...even in the middle of the street.  Dogs can be trained to recognize the signs and keep the sufferer safe.  One of his own could bring him freedom like he's never had and restore his self-respect.  Please consider donating to help him keep moving toward a more normal life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  The past few months have been difficult for the three of us, but have also brought us all even closer together.  The night before his third hospitalization, Zeus told me I'm a better mom to him than any other person's ever been.  He's very special to me.

SinfulShine in Who's the Gloss

Now, I know this is a weird color for me to wear. It's way more "Amanda" than "Nichole". But my husband picked it out, so I had to give it a try.

It's ok. I wish the purple was more wow in reality than it is. It is a dusty purple shimmer mixed with a charcoal gray. Very pretty...but just not "me". The formula is also weird: quite runny and a bit gloopy all at the same time. I used three full coats to cover the streaks. Thankfully, there are no brush strokes, which is a worry for me and shimmery colors. I love it, I'm just not in love with it.

outside my lightbox, under the fancy lights. It sure is glossy.

and of course, the obligatory matte coat. It brings out a
pinkish glow that I didn't notice before.

My Picks from China Glaze Autumn Nights

I'm posting on a Sunday. Weird, right?  Scheduling issues.  You'll understand soon.  It's a now or November sort of thing, so here we are.  Anyway... China Glaze's Autumn Nights focuses mostly on metallic finishes.  Out of twelve shades, there are six frosty metallic shimmers, four foils, and just two creams.  I passed on all of the shimmers when I bought my picks at the nail supply store, but I'm regretting skipping Tongue & Chic.  I had it in my basket, but I put it back.  I probably have something else like it, but my friend Patrice posted gorgeous photos of it on the Nail Board and I instantly kicked myself.  I'm also kinda tempted by Queen B...so who knows, I might pick up a few more when I go back to check for Monsters Ball (among other things) and to see if they EVER got OPI San Francisco.  For now though, let's check out the ones I did get...

Charmed, I'm Sure is a dusty dark purple cream.

I'll admit, I have a cream problem.  I kinda want one in every slight variation of colors I like.  It means I have a lot that don't stand out.  This....isn't one of those.  The formula is WONDERFUL.  Two coats, but they glide on effortlessly and turn out completely perfect.  Beyond that, this color blows me away.  My photo doesn't get it quite right.  It's dustier than this and that sets it apart.  Love it!

Gossip Over Gimlets is a silver foil with gold flecks.

We've seen a few like this before, but somehow I got sucked in again.  They just look so pretty in the bottles, blended foils like this.  The formula's good, not too thin or too thick, and opaque in two coats.  Stamped perfectly in a quick test I did....and it's quite pretty...

...but let's face it, it's very familiar.  I threw together a comparison with OPI Designer, De Better and Fergie by Wet n Wild Going Platinum.  They're not exact dupes, but you definitely don't need all three.

OPI * ChG * Fergie * ChG

The differences are more obvious in person, but still minimal.  The OPI's flecks are pinky copper instead of gold and the Fergie version is brighter than the other two.  Normal people could do with just one, but even polish fiends should probably choose between the China Glaze and the Fergie.  If I had to pick, I'd stick with China Glaze.  The Fergie is shinier, but the formula on the China Glaze is a bit better.

Strike Up a Cosmo is a medium rosy pink foil with copper flecks.

I waffled HARD before buying this.  It's so....pink.  Once I had it on, I wasn't sure how I felt about it.  The formula was good, and about the same as Gossip Over Gimlets.  It's just so....pink.  Still not completely sure how to feel about it.  I like it more in lower light, when it looks a little less....pink.

But then...as pinks go...I mean....well...it is very sparkly....  I'm so confused!

Goldie But Goodie is a dark-ish gold foil with copper flecks.

No confusion here, at all.  Love.  Just love.  Dazzling and deep.  The formula's a bit better than the previous two, and it could be a one-coater if you're careful.  I used two.  Careful is decidedly not my middle name.  (It's Katherine.)

I don't know how China Glaze did it, but there's something about Goldie But Goodie that I can't describe exactly and couldn't catch in my normal bottle pose.  That something is....this...

Almost looks like an ombre.  It catches the light so interestingly and can look very deep at some angles.  Too cool!

Rendezvous With You is a dark purple with tons of light gold shimmer.

Ok, so I fudged something a bit.  Rendezvous With You isn't a foil.  It does a great impression of one, but it's not.  The purple is just pigment, not a purple foil fleck in sight.  All of the shimmer is light gold, but the base tints it purple.  The effect is just amazing.  The formula's thick and could be a bit troublesome.  It has one-coater potential, but also lump potential.  I wound up using two coats, because the first was a little patchy in spots.  If you do use two, watch for dragging.  The slight difficulties are absolutely worth it.  Look at it glow!

But then...look at it also not glow...

Completely different in indirect light, and outstanding either way!

Bottom line: I've seen this collection written off as "boring" too many times to count.  I don't think that's quite fair.  Sure, the metallic shimmers are a bit on the frosty side and are half of the collection...but the foils are spot-on and Charmed, I'm Sure is everything I want a cream to be.  Goldie But Goodie, Rendezvous With You, and Charmed, I'm Sure are absolute beauties.  I'd call them must-haves.  Strike Up A Cosmo might be too pink for me, but is really pretty.  Gossip Over Gimlets is dupey, but still worth getting if you don't have something similar.

Can you believe September is virtually over already?  How did that happen?  Time flies when you're swatching, I guess.  As giddy as I was over the start of fall, my absolute favorite time of year is just around the corner now and I can hardly contain my excitement.  There's something else I can hardly contain...so for now...I'm gonna just stop typing. :P

Slimdown Saturday: Aaaand I'm Back

...kinda.  I'm back on track as of today.  Hopefully it goes better this time than the last time I said that.  Between a course of antibiotics for my teeth, how sick that made me, the usual problems I always have, and my 31st birthday, the last couple of weeks completely derailed me.  I have no idea what I weigh right now, but I know I've gained.  I'm not gonna beat myself up about it or give up, I'm just gonna re-re-re-re-re-focus.  Journeys, not destinations and all of that.

Real post next week, hopefully.

Orion on my Fingers

This post, and many more like it, can be seen on BedlamBeauty.com

I was feeling a little spacey this week, so I decided that I needed space nails of some sort. But I've done galaxy nails to death, and decided to do something a little different. Enter constellations!

Orion is my favorite constellation. When my oldest was an infant, I saw it a lot. I kind-of grew to love Orion. And it is definitely different!

Don't see it? No worries. It's a little abstract. But I promise I was as exact I as I could manage. I've drawn in the connecting lines here, so you can see what I was doing more clearly.

OPI Movin' Out

Just a quick post today, since I'm a bit busy with life stuff.  Fun, positive stuff for a change though.  Yay!  I've been thinking about today's mani for weeks, but I didn't make my final choice until this morning.  I didn't want to do something too close to last year's Max Factor Fantasy Fire over China Glaze Man Hunt.  That ruled out a few combinations I tried.  I wound up going with a decade old OPI classic over a newer one, Movin' Out over Every Month Is Octoberfest.  EMiO's beauty is completely overshadowed by Movin' Out, so it gets its moment first.

I'd forgotten how outstanding EMiO is.  I remembered it being gorgeous, but...not this gorgeous...

If I had to pick a best new polish of the whole year last year, this might be the one....or maybe Wet N Wild Poison Ivy.  The glow...just....mmm...

I was almost tempted to leave it as-is, but...I bit the bullet and hid one beauty under another.  I'm gonna just let the photos speak for themselves here.  I can't possibly add anything with words.

LED

So it's two favorites from my absolute favorite brand.  Perfect for tomorrow.  Even better, I'll have all of the Broadway duochromes as of tomorrow.  I've been waiting since APRIL for the three I'm getting and you can't imagine how pent up I am.  I was tempted to beg for them a day early so I could wear one today.  Ok, maybe I did beg and then changed my mind and just wore this.  Might have happened.  Anyway...gotta go get ready for festivities.

Foundation Tools...on Fruit

While cruising Pinterest (shut up), I stumbled upon a really cool blog post. It detailed the difference that the application tool makes when it comes to foundation. It's one of those things you know, but it's kinda awesome to see it demonstrated so plainly. I decided to give this a test, using all of the foundation tools I have accumulated.

First, you need a bowl of lemons. Or oranges, whatever. They have loads of dimples on the peel that is very similar to skin, albeit exaggerated.

Then, you must collect your tools.

 What I used:
A cheapy, disposable cosmetic wedge from Target
A knock-off Beauty Blender
Eco Tools flat foundation brush
Real Techniques buffing brush
Real Techniques stippling brush
 my fingers

Eco Tools Flat Foundation brush

This one looks the most like a proper paint brush, and that is basically what it does. It just lays the foundation on the skin. If you have really great skin, this will work fine for you. Alas, it does not work for me. My face ends up looking terribly similar to this lemon, all pits and pores.

Real Techniques Buffing Brush

This might be the best brush for applying foundation. If you have normal skin, it will fill in all the little pores flawlessly. You'll get a nice, even finish with it. But if you have problem skin (like me and my flaky spots) it will just stir them up and highlight them. I reserve this brush for blending out contour and blushers.

Real Techniques Stippling Brush

This is my second favorite tool to use. I prefer a more sheer finish, and this gives it to me. (I was also running out of my sample here.) It gets into all the crevices without irritating my flaky skin, and gives me an almost airbrushed finish. It's also very easy to layer, so you can apply more to areas that need extra help. But, because I do have some texture issues with my skin, it can get a little heavy for me.

this is not indicative of the coverage you can get. I was
just running out of the samples I had. Ooops!

Cheapo Cosmetic Wedge

Possibly the most budget friendly tool, aside from your fingers. If you dampen the sponge, you get a lovely sheer layer of foundation on your skin. The dampness helps it to just blend right in, leaving you without the obvious makeup look. It's also easily built up, so you can have more coverage in the places you need it most. The only downside to these is that they aren't intended to be reused. You can wash them, but they don't last more than a few applications.

Knock-off Beauty Blender

After reading pages and pages of reviews for the actual Beauty Blender, I decided to find a dupe. I figured if I liked the dupe, then I'd love the real thing. Well, let me tell you, I love the dupe. I picked this up for $5 at Marshall's, and it's worth every penny. This gives me the most natural look I've ever had with foundation. It even passes my magnifying mirror test. When you dampen this sponge (and the instructions say you must), it really just makes the foundation look like your real skin. And in places you've applied too much, the sponge can pick some product up, and fix the trouble without having to remove your whole face. These have a lifespan of about 3-6 months, and while they are a bit tricky to get completely clean, they are definitely reusable.

My Poor Fingers

I cannot ever use this method on my face. It's all streaks and pores for me. If I were faced with fingers or no foundation, I'll choose "no foundation every time. I have serious trouble getting an even layer with my fingers, and somehow, I always end up with polka dot pores. But, for some folks this works.

My Picks from SinfulShine Hot For Shine

When SinfulShine first showed up at one of my local Walgreens, I rushed to buy a few.  So far only Rebel has made it onto the blog.  I'm not completely convinced that they're worth the extra dollar, but Wisp is among the less troublesome white polishes I've tried.  It'll get a post on here eventually.  When I saw a new display on Nouveau Cheap, I actually oooh'ed out loud.  Some of them are very "me", to the point that I only skipped one.  Patent Pleasure is orange and I'm just not big on orange.  I bought my picks from this display the same day as my picks from Leather Luxe, also right out of the shipping boxes.  You may have noticed some of these shades as bases for my Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear glitter and LE Diamond Strength swatches recently.  I love that there are so many vibrant creams, crellies, and jellies out recently.  I'm really developing a passion for "plain" polish as I've seen some people call it.

*All of these swatches are with top coat except the one that notes otherwise*

Rise & Shinier is a vivid cool green cream.

...and it's a one-coater!  This is exactly what I want from every Sinful Colors or SinfulShine cream, color impact and thick smoothness.  Perfection.  I also love the self-referencing nod to Rise And Shine.  They're not dupes, by any means, but they're cousins that would probably compliment each other beautifully.

Sleek is an azure blue cream.

This is a color that Sinful keeps returning to, time and again, with slight variations.  I can't say I blame them.  It's gorgeous.  Sadly, it's surprisingly thin.  This is three coats.  Really a letdown when it comes to Sinful.  My nails are so stained right now that I can't be sure if this is a stainer, but I'd guess that it is.  It reminds me of  Maybelline Azure Seas along with the many similar Sinful blues that have way better formulas.  Still, such a beautiful color.

Go Glossy is a bright fuchsia crelly.

This one's watery too, also taking three coats.  I can't blame it as much as Sleek, since it's got a sheer-ish formula.  In a collection that "rhymes" pretty strongly with previous Sinful Colors shades, I'd call this one a less flamboyant sister to Dream On.

Mirror Mirror is a dark red crelly.

Where Go Glossy is watery, Mirror Mirror is too thick.  This is two coats and I had bubbling issues.  It's sexy, but was a pain and I'll thin it before using it again.

Caving a bit to the premise of Sinful Shine, I took a photo of Mirror Mirror before topcoating it.  It shows how bad the bubbling was, but also validates the shine claim.

no topcoat

Shine Divine is a dark teal cream.

I have no clue what was going on with the lighting, but all of my photos of Shine Divine make me look either orange or translucent.  Sorry.  Two coats for this one.  It sorta reminds me of a lighter (and kinda sucky) Calypso.  It's patchy in this light, but looks better in person.  Not a bad color, but I prefer Calypso.

Who's The Gloss is a deep taupe full of warm purple shimmer.

Sinful finally dupes Chanel instead of just OPI!  Hooray!  I love this so much.  Nichole, you were right...or you will be in a few days.  This is two coats and the formula was good.  It's similar to other Paradoxal dupes, but seems to be purpler...which is awesome.  Yay!

Slick is a metallic purple with a blue duochrome shift.

I saved one of the best for last.  Slick is like the lovechild of two classics, Sinful Colors Let's Talk (my photo is waaay off color-wise and almost a year old) and OPI Glacier Bay Blues.  It's almost a one-coater, but I used two.  There's a hint of brushstroking, but nothing horrible.  The shift to blue is sudden and really hard to photograph.  I was so worried that these photos wouldn't turn out right at all.  They looked 100% blue on my camera's preview screen, but they're purple on computer screens.  *phew*  Still, my photos barely convey the awesomeness.  At extreme angles, the whole nail is blue-green, but I just couldn't get it to show up right.  Do yourself a massive favor and see it in person.

You see the blue on the bottle up there?  It translates to the nail.  Really.  It's also even shinier and glowier than Let's Talk.

Bottom line: Overall, this first seasonal SinfulShine collection is really good.  All of the colors are interesting and eye-catching, but there are a few iffy formulas.  Mirror Mirror bubbled, Sleek and Go Glossy are watery, and Shine Divine can be a bit patchy.  The rest are all good or great.  My strongest recommendations go to Rise And Shinier, Slick, and Who's The Gloss.  In that order.  I wouldn't warn against any of them, but my weakest "yes" goes to Sleek.  Between the watery formula and dupey color...you can find a better azure cream.

Well...the polish is pretty, but my feelings toward Sinful Colors as a company are a bit ugly right now.  They have a bit of a history of ignoring the rights of bloggers, and now they've done it to me.  On one level I'm flattered.  Whoever runs their Instagram account clearly likes my swatches.  On another level, I feel a little sick.  (Not just personally, but for the others whose photos are also used without credit.)  I'm not given any credit for my ownership of my photos or for the time and money (partly to them) that I invest in swatching.  I know I don't watermark my photos, but legally it doesn't matter.  America became a party to the Berne Convention in 1988, so my rights to my photos are protected both as photos which I took and as a publication on this blog.  The thing is, I don't want them taken down.  I just want the credit I deserve...and the traffic it would bring.  I have tried to contact Sinful Colors several times recently on different sites, but have not received a reply.  If all else fails, I will either contact Revlon as their parent company or I will just report the violation to Instagram and have the photos removed.  That's really not what I want.  I'm not asking you to boycott the brand (or Revlon), but I couldn't keep quiet about their disrespectful and illegal behavior anymore.  I'm still going to buy their polish and post it on here, but I might be watermarking just those swatches...and I'll feel a little sick again each time I give them a bit of my money or post my generally gushing reviews of the polish I still really do mostly love.  Yuck.
