Sally Hansen Big Smoky Top Coat

Trans-formative top coats are not new. Every glitter top coat is basically a transformer. Smoky coats aren't new either, though for the life of me I can't remember who else had them a few years ago (if you do, tell me in the comments? It's killing me). I finally succumbed to the novelty of it, and picked up this one when it was on sale at Target.

I wasn't sure what this was going to look like, or even if I'd like it. So, in order to cover all my bases I decided to try it over a bunch of different colors. I had, overall, decent results. I am quite surprised.

Basically, this is a graphite colored jelly polish. I found it a bit streaky, especially over the yellow color. I used two coats per nail, and that did help. It's just too watery and floody to avoid the streaks, for me anyway. I am not a careful polisher. That just isn't me. Maybe if you have a really steady hand, you'll have less trouble with the streaks.

I did like this effect though. It looks really pretty over the bright blue...but that's about it. It turned the spring green into olive drab, and made the yellow muddy (and highlighted some weird warbly in my nail). The red is meh overall. I think this is a neat idea...but it's too gimmicky for me.

TL;DR is if you want to try this...wait until you have a coupon. You could DIY this for a much better price.

  2. I think Dior was the first one to make it. Then there were Essence and L'Oreal ones :)

  3. I eyed this up at Target and ended up passing on it. I am, however, curious how it would look on its own.
