Orly Mirrorball vs Octopus Party Sizzler

Major brands duping the little guys? Say it ain't so, Orly! Well...it is so. Rather good news for us, considering that they picked one of the prettiest discontinued OPNL polishes to copy. Orly is no stranger to making dupes, but this is the first time that I have noticed them going after an indie in such an obvious way. (Remember, I am new to indies!) So lets see the swatches!

(this post has a new home. Please come visit me over at bedlambeauty.com)

I started seeing swatches of Orly Mirrorball a month or two ago. At first, I was really annoyed, because I thought it was OPNL Sizzler...which I knew was no longer available. For a brief second I was mad at Dave for re-releasing it without so much as a passing mention. But all the places I was seeing it were not the familiar places for indies...and I eventually discovered that the impostor was part of Orly's 2014 holiday collection. It is amazingly close.

Similarities
  • Both brands need two/three coats to be opaque.
  • They both have a linear rainbow flare
  • Identical amounts and sizes of holo glitter
  • slight texture
  • great wear-time

Differences

  • Orly uses spectraflair, so the rainbow is slightly stronger
  • Orly is a bit easier to smooth with top coat
  • OPNL has a more delicate finished look

the "close up" setting frightens me.

My Opinion
Sizzler is (sadly) no longer available. I couldn't even find it on eBay, though admittedly I am shit at searches like that. Obviously, I am partial to Sizzler because Dave is my pal...but really they are so painfully similar that there is no reason to own both. In fact, if you lament never getting a chance to grab Sizzle then Mirrorball is totally worth the cost.

Tl;dr OPNL Sizzler = Orly Mirrorball

  1. Playing devils advocate a bit. When did the OPNL come out because the big brands plan their collections way before we ever even see a promo pic for upcoming releases. They probably have had Mirror ball planned since last fall or earlier. Both are super pretty !

    1. Sizzler was part of the Summer collection for OPNL, and I know he had it planned a bit before that. But yeah, the big guys plan things suuuper far in advance.

    2. Yeah, I remember seeing pics of Mirrorball that bloggers snapped at Cosmoprof back in July because I was super excited about it. I think it is just a coincidence, but good for those that missed out on the OPNL! They are both just stunning and your comparison pics are awesome!

    1. oh yeah! It will definitely be good for New Years. I couldn't find this locally, so I ended up ordering it from head2toebeauty.com. I think it was $9 shipped, which is what I would pay before tax anyway.

  3. If you did only one coat, would it work as a holo topper? Or would it be streaky and/or grey? It's tricky finding a linear topcoat for a decent price where I live (and shipping here is nuts), so I'm hoping this could be a winner! What do you think?
