Look of the Day: Ariel Envy

The Disney palettes from Sephora are all the rage right now. Ariel is the newest (and last) princess to get her own palette. The steep $55 price tag is a little out of my range. So I decided to make my own look with what I had at home. It's my first try at all-over color, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Products Used:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
NYX Perpetual Shadow trio (I used the green.)
The Wet'n'Wild Octopus palette ( I used the darker turquoise)
Bare Minerals Flawless Definition Volumizing mascara
Bare Minerals brow powder in Brunette
Covergirl Liquidline Blast eyeliner in Blackfire

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer in Green
Bare Minerals Original foundation in Fair
Bare Minerals concealer in Bisque
Bare Minerals duo blush+warmth thing (I've had it forever)

it looks so subtle. I felt like I was wearing a ton!

pretty proud of my eyes here

Things I have learned thus far:

Tightlining your eyes is annoying. And it tickles. But it makes a difference in looks like this. Without at least lining the bottom waterline, the whole look felt unfinished.

I can fill my eyebrows in heavier than I think I should. It still looks acceptable. I need to learn to not be afraid of makeup.

My eyelashes do not curl. No matter what. I can accept that.

I do not see my face as it is in reality. I felt like I was wearing a ton of makeup. I looked in the mirror at home and thought "ohgod, am I really gonna go out like this?" But in the light of day, and behind my glasses, it really wasn't overdone. And I got compliments on it. I should ignore myself.

It's ok to wear color under the lower lashes. It's about the only thing I see once I have the glasses on.

  1. HI, here from Nouveau Cheap. I was wondering if you think the Bare Minerals brow powder in Brunette you used is warm or cool toned? I need a cool toned one and I'm having issues finding a good one. Yes I can use an eyeshadow but I've heard powders made for brows is different so it doesn't wear off as easier if you touch it. Have you tried both? What are your thoughts?

    1. I've been using the brow powder for a few years. It definitely seems more cool-toned to me, like an espresso color. I can swatch it alone for you if you want? It definitely seems long-wearing to me. If I make a mistake, and go to rub it off it definitely doesnt want to budge. I've not tried a lot of other brow products, save for pencils. It has a decidedly different texture than regular shadow, it seems a bit thicker to me.

  2. When I think of espresso I think of a warm brown like MAC's espresso eyeshadow. A brow product review post would be fun since brows are big right now in makeup. Thanks.

    1. I think you just decided my weekend project. Now to find some brow pencils and what-have-you. I've been using this stuff for so long that I don't have anything else!

  3. That's awesome!!!! I've religiously for probably 8 years now used the Cover Girl brow and eye markers pencil in soft brown. It's the only cool toned brown in the drugstore that I've found. I hear it a lot that cool toned browns work best with brunettes and we need to go a little lighter. It's absolutely my holy grail. It's super waxy, which I like, so it keeps my brows in place. I find you have to sharpen it each use or the wax gets 'hard' so that it doesn't transfer well anymore.

    1. hmm, I'll see if I can find that. I've got an Ulta coupon that is burning a hole in my pocket! I might also just swatch everything brow related in that store, for science!
